Unexpected equipment failures cost the hydropower industry millions every year. In an effort to help even more hydro owners and operators better predict and prevent these critical malfunctions, the Hydropower Research Institute (HRI) is exploring Elder Research’s Ægir Predictive Maintenance Solution™. By combining HRI’s large operational and event datasets with Ægir’s advanced AI and machine learning capabilities, this strategic partnership provides a proven predictive maintenance solution for HRI members.
“At HRI we are constantly looking for opportunities to leverage technology and new tools that add value to our members operational data analysis,” says HRI President Brett Bickford. “This opportunity to work with Elder Research shows how easy it is to utilize HRI data to monitor abnormal operations through use of industry-leading tools.”
Ægir takes the guesswork out of predictive maintenance with actionable insights from sensor streams and maintenance records, early anomaly detection, and proactive alerts. Those insights are strengthened by HRI’s datasets, which include data points from 197 hydropower plants and 844 generating units. This partnership supports HRI’s efforts to help its members lower the cost of operations and maintenance through digital transformation.
“Elder Research is honored that HRI sees the value in Ægir,” says Vic Diloreto, Elder Research Chief Technology Officer. “Using HRI’s available data, we can apply predictive models that seek out the leading indicators of equipment failure. This helps more operators isolate exactly what needs a closer look and provides actionable insights. Being able to do this precisely and quickly can mean the difference between resources saved and costly unplanned downtime.”
HRI is a growing community of hydropower owner-operators and researchers, including Chelan County PUD, New York Power Authority, Ontario Power Generation, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the Bureau of Reclamation.
