Team Roles

Data Scientists

Data Scientists are highly skilled at extracting and conveying meaning and value from data, but also understand business goals and constraints, and how data science consultants can shepherd change in an organization.  (Not every team member has to be equally balanced in these areas, but every team does.) Data Scientists work with client managers, analysts, and technical staff to understand business needs and then develop technical plans for solutions to complex data problems that will deliver value. In a collaborative and fast-paced environment they brainstorm and test hypotheses, and create and deploy predictive models.  Along the way, new concepts and practices that work are systematized to continually improve our state of the art products, tools and techniques.

Data Analyst

Data Programmers work with client managers and technical staff to understand business processes and develop custom software to solve and implement data science and analytic solutions.  They integrate relational databases (and other data management tools) into client database/data warehouse systems, and aid in the data science exploratory and pre-processing work with their skills in software development, and database management.

Software Engineer

Software Engineers help craft the tools for collaborative solutions for mission critical problems. Working closely with data scientists and business consultants they build robust systems that create, manage, and deploy meaningful statistical models from large datasets in a variety of formats (RDBMS, NoSQL, Spark, flat file, etc.) for clients ranging from startups to Fortune 50 companies. Software Engineers are consulted or relied on in every stage of the software development lifecycle, from idea formation and requirements gathering through implementation, testing, deployment, and maintenance. Software Engineers use functional programming and (potentially) experience with statistical and mathematical programming, machine learning, and/or natural language processing, in a data-driven environment.

Intern

Interns work on teams as data analysts in training, contributing real work on technical projects.  The Summer Intern Training Program walks interns through a controlled data science project over ten weeks.  Interns learn Elder Research's agile product flow, moving sequentially through scoping, data preparation, modeling, and a final presentation.  As an intern, you will learn critical data science skills while working on real-world challenges under the mentorship of our veteran analysts and engineers.

what are we looking for?

We are looking for very bright, creative people with diverse backgrounds who enjoy solving real world problems as part of a team. We primarily hire people who have strong skills in data analysis or software development.  Credentials and degrees are helpful, experience is very attractive, but the things that are essential are strong character, love of learning, love of completing projects, and team skills. You may find yourself working in finance one month and healthcare the next, while having a background in neither, so we need you to have the humility and confidence to ask the questions needed as we learn together how to solve our client’s greatest challenges.

Members of our staff have educational backgrounds in a wide range of fields such as computer science, mathematics, biology, economics, English, finance, aerospace engineering, and others.
